A ray of hope
Sara Lili | Day 3
The last day of URJCmun 2020 leaded to the second topic of the UN Refugees Agency: children seeking asylum. All the countries agreed on the necessity of protecting homeless children. However, most of the times, words do not mean actions. Breaking news impacted on the delegates of the committee a little after the first session started. Apparently, twenty children disappeared in the border of Turkey after being transferred from Italy under the control of the European Union.
It is known that a Russian submarine was seen in a Turkish military base a day before the incident. However, the delegation of the Russian Federation has denied any possible relation between the children and the Russian army. What is more, a Syrian gang was seen in a Turkish civilization point, nearby the refugee camp the children vanished from sight. The Syrian delegate said we ought not to fall in the hands of smugglers and murderers responding to this current information, and he kept saying that security is a must to for these events not to occur again.
Australia tried to get through the security problem with a new proposition: implanting some microchips in all children refugees in order to control their location. Nevertheless, the rest of the committee could not agree less in this idea. As the session passed, delegates could not see the light for these children. When Cuba and non-European delegations started to speak, the blame fell on the European Union, who kept taking these children to overflown camps in countries where the massiveness of the issue was unbearable.
“No one can solve this problem alone” is what the delegation of Germany said while the members of the room were throwing knives to each other. Cooperation is the key to any problem, and that is what the United Nations work for. UNHCR committee did not have a resolution for this topic, but delegates seem to be closer to a resolution than the first minutes of the early morning. Maybe URJCmun 2021 surprises us.

Confronted blocs in action looking for a resolution
Sara Lili | Day 2
Above all the topics treated, such as economic resources and humanitarian and international aid, sanctions have been the most discussed topic during the morning of the third day in UN Refugees Agency. Some delegates say that sanctions to Venezuela should be necessary in order to help refugees, but others believe Venezuelan citizens will be the most affected ones if this point is to run.
“There is no way for this country to reborn and the Venezuelans to come back” said the delegation of United Arab Emirates against the imposition of sanctions some of the delegates were proposing to impose to Venezuela. Other countries, such as Brazil and Saudi Arabia, followed the delegation of United Arab Emirates’ steps and publicly joined the delegate of Venezuela. Nevertheless, some members in the room did not last in attacking the Bolivarian State.
The delegation of Venezuela got really annoyed due to the intervention of the delegates in his country’s politics. Various individuals brought up that a country with politic prisoners should not have this support from democracies. He did not wait to emphasize in the creation of a database system to help the Latin American countries survive to this migration crisis to confront his opponents. In addition to this last concept, allocation in urban areas and the removal of sanctions to Venezuela were the most significant measures to take in his bloc, but the opposite side suggested other interesting ideas.
Australia attacked saying a draft resolution should not be representing the interests of a bloc. With the delegates of Canada, Japan and Argentina, the delegation of the biggest island of Oceania added more points in order to help the refugees: education, healthcare, humanitarian and economic aid for neighbouring countries and much more security in the borders and the most crowded spots of Venezuela.
Today’s aim was to reach a resolution for Venezuelan refugees, but what looked like a way out, ended up being an unsuccessful result. None of the draft resolutions got enough votes to be ratified by the board. Let´s hope tomorrow’s results to be successful.

A problem to be solved, and millions waiting for it
Sara Lili | Day 1
Refugees are people fleeing conflict or persecution. They are defined and protected in international law and must not be expelled or returned to situations where their life and freedom are at risk. That’s the whole point about the United Nations Refugee Agency, to protect people from war, danger and death, and give them asylum. Nevertheless, delegates seemed to doubt about this issue.
The migration of Venezuelan people being the second most massive refugee movement of our history, it is common to sense anger in the air. The economic inflation, misery and lack of democracy are some of the facts that not just Venezuelan individuals have to face, but every country that sees its borders totally overflown with people in need. This is why many delegates believe in the necessity of aid and integration to the Venezuelans who leave their nation.
However, not everyone agrees to it. Palestine declared this migration as a matter of economic interests discussing no persecution in Venezuelans departure. Other countries, such as Cuba, offered the total support to the government of Maduro stating Venezuela as a democracy.
The delegation of Unites States has come with a different opinion: the US will support Guaidó’s ideas, but no more refugees may be welcome in their territory. Trump’s politics may be democratic, but they have more in common with racist ideologies than with morality.
Racism created the lack of nationalities to loads of ethnic groups after the end of the Second World War. As Edelmira Campos, a working woman for the office of UNHCR in Spain, explained in the early morning, the next decolonisation and new wars maintained this conflict until nowadays. There is no better example than Hala’s, a Syrian refugee living in Spain. “Nobody wants to leave their country, their work, their family, but that’s life” said Hala during the opening of the first session of the committee. As she says, the current situation of Syria has created a global migration crisis and millions of people escape with no destiny in mind but a clear idea: be safe.
As safe, most delegates understand a democratic solution to Venezuela and its people, but they do not come to an agreement about how to do it.
“You are not representing yourself, but your country’s interests” is the first thing the chair of UNHCR, Miguel Fernández, said to the delegates. As he stated, this time is significant for change. Those in war beg for peace, and there are too many battles to win. Let’s face them.
