Love itself is a higher law: Establishing Agenda for the Refugees Rights
It was 10 a.m when people started to arrive. We could see restless faces, emotion, the
delegates were very keen to meet each other. Everyone was impatient to start. During the
review of rules and procedures, delegates seem quite nervous. However, the nerves began
to dissipate when they started an informal debate about whether it was better to watch the
movies on netflix or going out to the cinema.
Human trafficking and LGBTQI+ refugees, really important topics of debate for which the
world must find a solution. Delegates must be discussing them during these days and try to
agree and write a resolution about it. In order to introduce the debate, Lucía Mantecón came
as a speaker with a really important and interesting presentation about topic A, which is:
Ensuring equal treatment and reception conditions for LGBTQI+ refugees. As some of the
delegates told me, they really liked the presentation as they said it was quite fascinating and
useful for the debate.
After the presentation, the debate was open. By unanimity, the delegates decided to start
with the topic regarding LGBTQI+ refugees. It was the Afghanistan delegation the one in
charge to start the General Speaker’s List. From there on, the delegates keep on showing
their country's position concerning the topic.
When few of the delegations had already spoken, there was a motion in order to start a
moderate caucus on the topic of Equal Treatment for LGBTQI+ refugees. This was the
moment in order to see which of the countries had similar interests and thoughts as their
own. There was an Iron Curtain made between the delegations between the ones that
thought refugees shouldn’t be treated equally as not everybody had the same issues, and
the ones like Afghanistan that thought it was fair to treat everyone equally. But there were
things in which many of the delegations agreed: basic human rights must be fulfilled.
Highlight what the delegation of Norway saying that the declaration of Human Rights must
be followed, which states that everybody must be treated equally no matter their condition.
During another moderate caucus proposed on the topic of the possible solutions for LGBT
refugees, here the delegations were able to know what each of the present delegations are
doing to solve or at least try to solve this problem Great Britain took control of the moderate
caucus emphasizing in several occasion that they should stick to the topic and not beating
around the bush
Are the LGBTQI+ refugees aware of their rights? Which is the morality of the countries which
are totally against of the LGBT rights and even penalize their sexual orientation? Which are
ways of discrimination LGBTQ+ people suffer? Which are the mental health consequences
for LGBTQ+ refugees? These were some of the other topics talked about in different
caucuses and general consultations. Would they be able to find a solution? Will they
cooperate in order to establish a resolution? Or will the egos of the superpowers prevail
before people’s rights? Just remember, as Hillary Clinton said, just like being a woman, like
being an ethnic, religious or tribal minority, being LGBT doesn't make you any less human

Hypocrisy and morality: Which of them will prevail?
Second day, it seems delegates have come with fully recharged batteries and with their
desires to the fullest to find solutions. It was that big the aim of continuing debating that all
delegations arrived on time, and they skipped any possible punishment.
Are there some delegations being hypocritical? This could have been the title of the
chronicle. Some of the examples are Afghanistan, a country where death penalty is imposed
for homosexual people but that presumed of several measures to “protect” LGBT refugees.
Or Italy, which is one of the Western countries where marriage of people of the same gender
is still prohibited. Even Finland, who denied the asylum of a kid because he had 2 mums,
violating article number 22 of the Convention on the Rights of Children.
Nevertheless, we hope that peace and equality prevail over the hypocrisy, and the measures
taken on today’s resolutions, will be ratified by many countries and fulfilled by all of
them. After listening to yesterday’s chronicle, the General Speakers List was reopened. Since
yesterday, the delegates wanted to start writing the resolutions, however, in order to do that,
we will have to keep on knowing each of the countries’ positions. That is why, a Consultation
of the whole was proposed on the topic of “Short Term solutions for LGBT+ refugees' . This
was a very important step to let us know their possible future resolutions. In fact, some of the
proposals were creating a Medicine Bank, which was very supported by Western countries
such as Norway or Germany, or the relocation of refugees.
Relocation of the refugees had that impact, that was even the main topic for an
unmoderated caucus. During the unmoderated caucus, we could already see 2 different
blocks already working on their draft resolutions. Nevertheless, there were several countries
like China or Japan which preferred to wait and get to know the solutions of each of the
blocks in order to position themselves as they thought both of the blocks had things they
liked. On the other hand, delegations of Congo or China talked about the morals of Western
countries, saying they didn’t pay attention to the developing countries, accusing them of
hypocrital.
After lunch and before we got to know their resolutions, we had the best part of the debate:
the Gossips. Whatsmore, as some of the delegates such as: Afghanistan, Malaysia, Norway,
Germany…didn’t arrive on time, they had some punishments, some of those were dancing
Saturday night, Bachata or reading some tongue-twisters.
Lastly, we got to know how the resolutions ended. Firstly, the Western countries introduced
their resolutions with measures like the transport of the refugees or training experts and
encouraged volunteers and medical assistants to provide physical and mental health care
just for refugees.
Secondly, the other block presented a resolution where some of the measures were the
relocation of refugees or cutting from the root the problem of the refugees. Finally, none of
the resolutions passed. This means, the egos and the hypocrisy have won. LGBT refugees
will still have to look for the chestnuts, and continue fighting for their rights. It is absolutely
imperative that every human being’s freedom and human rights are respected, all over the
world, however, today, you have demonstrated that your ass is bigger than any equality that
could be achieved. And as Jason Collins, the first male professional athlete to publicly
identify himself as gay once said: “Openness may not completely disarm prejudice, but it’s a
good place to start.”

Human Trafficking, Ukrainan Crisis and the discovery of very cool people
Although it was the last day of URJC Mun Teen, delegates were happier than ever, they
realized this is a great experience they would love to repeat. However, there were also sad
moments, when they had cotton on it this will be the last time, at least for this year, they will
be debating. They have made a great group, and as far as they have said, they will keep in
contact to meet each other any other time.
Yesterday, they had already started with the Topic B: Human Trafficking for which, as it
happened with the other topic, delegates came quite prepared. About this horrible practice,
countries had the opportunity to talk about themes like the differences between human
trafficking and migration criminal networks, border control, police training, prevent parents
selling their children…
Recatching what the day before had been talked about, today there were several disputes
between the countries. The country of Afghanistan suggests imposing legislation to
developed countries, and especially to big multinationals in order to pay a minimum wage to
their workers in other countries to avoid labour exploitation. Ghana targeted that the
developed countries and the rich people were the ones benefiting from labour exploitation,
however, she pointed out the fact of the sex traffiking and sexual abuse, which was seconded
by Japan affirming that sex industry is in every country. It was the delegation of Great Britain
firmly declared that this comity can’t take legal action as that is part of the Security Council,
and that the aim of UNHCR is proposing measures to protect the refugees. Verbatim words
of Samantha, delegate from UK “Stop talking about legislation and just worry about the
people who are used for sexual exploitation, with especial attention, to the children”.
Not everything was saving the planet from human trafficking, we also had gossip time and
punishments. Today it was the moment for Beyonce’s dancing, making Tik Toks, or lipsing
“Colgando en tus manos”, among others.
Delegates were caught by surprise when, after Coffee Break, they found a list of countries'
names written on the blackboard. But they got even more astonished when the Chairs, the
Staff and the Press, entered into the room dressed up and explaining a crisis, expressing their
sadness and disappointment with some of the countries that didn’t want to accept Ukrainian
refugees in their countries. It was the moment in which the delegates should look for a
solution to the problem. Luckily, they were able to agree, and the resolution finally passed.
The last part of the day were the prices. Though all of them did a great job and it was very
difficult to choose who had excelled a bit more, it was finally concluded that Great Britain
was the best delegation, Congo the best delegate and honorable mention for Afghanistan
and Italy.
