UNESCO

Songs, dances, catwalks….

A non-moderated session

Today was the funniest day at the UNESCO Committee.
3 de febrero 2022
The third day at the UNESCO Committee began with a moderated caucus about the working papers. These are preliminary technical papers in which different delegates share ideas about a topic and try to give some solutions. In this case, the question was associated with decentralization of cultural policies and protection of cultures. The delegation of Venezuela wanted to express their gratitude to every nation that took part in this plan: Kuwait, Australia, Philippines, Nigeria, Brazil, and the Democratic Popular Republic of Korea. “We need to focus on our identities. We want to work from the centre. Protection and unification of all countries”, expressed the delegation of the DPRK.

We could have a fun time after the coffee break. So many delegations were dancing, singing, and doing all kind of silly things. Press could also sing a song while the representatives of Ukraine were dancing. Furthermore, chronicler and camara could make a sexy catwalk. Chairs were reading a lot of gossips, including all types of challenges and hot jokes. At last, this committee has been interesting. Staff was the only team who didn’t accept any demand from delegates. They were coward. “We have dignity”, expressed one of them. No one believed them. We had a new face in the Committee too. She was one of the delegates of Tunisia, who couldn’t come the first and second day because she is a busy woman with several responsibilities.

Press had the chance to interview the delegation of Australia during a non-moderated caucus. We wanted to know their feelings, if they were enjoying the sessions and whether they had a crush inside or outside the committee too: “We are glad about the commission. Chairs treat us well and discussions are fascinating. We don’t have a crush, but we have sent a lot of gossips, including many challenges for other delegates”.

After lunch break, the representatives of DPRK, Philippines, Malta, and the State of Kuwait proceed to read their resolution on the main topic: Globalization: protection and promotion of cultures. “This resolution will promote and save our cultures”, affirmed intensely the last of them.
The other resolution had sponsors such as Portugal, Ukraine, Canada, and Belgium. “Our program promotes the identity of our nations, diversity and the agenda 2030”, said the representative of Canada. Kuwait reprimanded it, because, according to them, it was insulting their delegation and the rest of their partners.

At the end of the session, every delegation started to sing and dance the famous theme “Pepas”, the new Spanish anthem.

The impact of globalization and national cultures

Welcome to the chauvinist party

Big and serious debate today in the UNESCO about the importance of the protection of culture.

The second day at the UNESCO Committee began with a bit of delay caused by some delegates, who were reprimanded by the Chairs. At 10:15 am, the session started with the representative of Brazil talking about the importance of protecting culture. “Culture are many things: TV, series, programmes, landscapes… we must protect it and we can’t lose it”, he expressed.

Other delegations like Japan, Vietnam, Philippine, North Korea, or Sweden also wanted to participate in the discussion: “History is fundamental and necessary to protect our cultures”. “If we don’t defend our values and traditions, we can’t continue progressing as nations”. “We must preserve our traditions, our identity”. “If we have open minds, we can make a deal to solve this really important problem”. These were some of the arguments that proposed several of the different countries.

In fact, every delegation taking part on the debate shared the same idea: every country has the obligation to promote and preserve their identity, national values, and languages. We assisted to a party full of chauvinism.

In exclusive words of the representatives of the Popular Democratic Republic of Korea, in a time of a non-moderated caucus, they explained to us the great relevance of this topic. It accumulated a big part of the debate, and their suggested solutions were: “From our delegation, we say that we might to focus on the preservation of culture. We assume that we can be really conservative in many ways, but we think that we have to stop the impact of globalization, to protect our identities”. We could ask them too if they consider North Korea as an example of democratic values, and they were totally clear: “This is not about political ideals. It is a question of preserve our identities and lifestyles. If we lose that, we lose everything and who we are”.

Another point of the day was a dialogue about decentralization of cultural policies. The representative of Philippines appeared to be really upset with other delegations interventions. They severally affirmed that “this is a not political agenda; this is a cultural agenda”.

There was also a small conflict between North Korea and the Portuguese Republic, where the first one defended themselves from the attacks of Portugal. They alleged they don’t need to be a liberal democracy like others; they only are dedicated protecting their country and their traditions at all costs.

ISRAEL: "Culture makes us who we are"

The UNESCO Committee debated about topics such as globalization and protection of national cultures
1 de febrero 2022
The first day of URJCmun X Edition started this Tuesday. Around 9:15 in the morning, all the delegates of the UNESCO Committee began to arrive to the first session, with the Chairs and all the Staff team. Most of those representatives came from a country that all Spanish people love: France. There were also delegates from the Netherlands, Venezuela and Spain. At 9:45 a.m., the opening ceremony of the X Edition of URJCmun was broadcast online.

At the beginning, there were some technical problems when showing the introductory video of the event. Finally, it could be watched successfully and without further setbacks. The ceremony lasted approximately 45 minutes. At 10:45, the presentations of all the delegations of the committee started. At 11:00, we were all able to go for a coffee and take a half hour break.

At 11:30, the meeting was summarized with the presence of Ana Vico Belmonte, professor at the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos and director of the Master in Art Market Management. She gave us a talk about "The Strength of European Cooperation Against Illicit Trafficking in Cultural Property". Some delegates stated that they had some difficulty in following the lecture, mainly because they could not understand her very well with the mask. The UNESCO presidents then opened the floor to a question-and-answer session so that the representatives could ask Ms. Belmonte any questions they had. At 13:45, it was time for a lunch break.

Back at the committee, the first formal discussion began at 15:45. It was the state of Kuwait that started talking about which food products are better and less harmful to health: salty or sweet. A variety of analyses and different points of view were opposed between the different countries represented.

The issue of sugar regulation was also discussed, as consuming large quantities of sugar is harmful to the body, according to some delegations. There was also some laughter during the session.

Later, the North Korean representatives proposed a dialogue on the impact of globalization on the world and solutions to protect national cultures. The Israeli representative stated that "national cultures must be protected at all costs, because that is what makes us who we are, and that cannot disappear".
