The first day of URJCMUN 2015 started in Vicálvaro, where took place the "zero" session, which is composed of several committees.
In the Classroom 205 was DISEC committee, where the main topic of discussion was the subject of the Arctic or the drones. The class was full, there was not a single hole without placards of different countries. After presenting the chair and the co-chair, the meeting was inaugurated, and all the countries convened were rolled. Two delegates per country had to present their reasons why they believed they must defend one issue or another, and thus being supported by the rest. In the living room there was a nice participatory environment Everyone wanted to talk. Delegates, with his speech in front, they repassed quietly what later they would have to give. First step was the main discussion: The Arctic or the drones. The chair was giving the way to each delegation: Russian Federation, China, USA, Afghanistan, Canada, UK, Cuba... there were many countries in favor to the Arctic, because they believed that it was the most important issue for discuss. And yes, it was. With a majority of votes, the Arctic beat the drones and the debate began a few minutes later. The interventions of the different delegates were correct and were coordinated by the chair, which limited their time, depending on the subject to discuss, giving 7 to 10 minutes. Delegates from different countries proposed different discussion topics related to the Arctic, from the polar thaw to military intervention. Among cordial proposals, there was also anger, like Sweden, after their quote "The Artic is for the Arctic", which caused a stir in the room. On the other hand, The Democratic Republic of Korea complained that the meeting was focusing on both the economy and militarization, so they suggested that climate change was the most urgent issue in the Arctic, instead of the other issues. The session was finished because concluded at 18:00, not for lack of initiative on the part of the delegates. The truth is that this year the MUN comes stomping, leaving us expectant for the rest of the committees during the week.
